Dead Man Walking

Story & Setting:

This American opera, based on the memoir of Sister Helen Prejean and her relationship with a death row inmate, was also the subject of the Oscar-nominated movie starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. The opera’s story details Sister Helen’s fight for the soul of condemned murderer Joseph De Rocher, and explores themes of forgiveness, faith, and finding common ground.

Since its premiere in 2000, Jake Heggie’s masterpiece has remained the most widely performed new opera of the last 20 years. The high drama of the story is matched by beautiful and poignant music, set to a libretto by Tony and Emmy Award-winning writer Terrance McNally.
