L'Elisir d'Amore
Story & Setting:
In this operatic version of a rom-com, the lovable and bumbling Nemorino tries everything to woo spunky landowner Adina. The small town hijinks involve a visiting company of soldiers, an unexpected inheritance, and a traveling swindler peddling a magical cure for all woes, romantic or otherwise.
Opera Notes:
Despite being on the lighter side, Donizetti’s signature bel canto style is on full display in this work, with incredibly memorable vocal lines for the main characters, specifically the show-stopping tenor aria “Una furtive lagrima.” The appealing nature of the musical score, character development, and feel-good plot all make this one of the most consistently popular comic operas of the last 200 years.
