The Hours

The Hours

Story & Setting:

Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, Michael Cunningham’s novel The Hours became made a household name thanks to the Oscar-winning 2002 film adaptation starring Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman. The powerful story concerns three women from different eras who each grapple with their inner demons and their roles in society.

Opera Notes:

Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Kevin Puts and librettist Greg Pierce join forces for this world premiere at the Met, starring an all-star trio of Renée Fleming, Kelli O’Hara and Joyce DiDonato. The piece is being written specifically with these singers in mind, and Puts describes his music as “poly-stylistic,” aptly mirroring the 3 separate time periods in which the action takes place.
